Why Green Water?

Green.. a colour long associated to little Martian from outer space. The Incredible Hulk is green. How to define the colour green? “It resembles the color of growing grass” as I was told.

In water, there are uncountable numbers of microorganisms and one big bulk of these are the plankton. There are zoo plankton and phytoplankton. The phytoplankton like plants carry a complex bio molecule called chlorophyll.  Chlorophyll is green like Hulk.

So why chlorophyll is green and not purple? The molecule tends to absorb preferred wavelengths of light but there is one should I say ‘discarded’…the green one. The green wavelength is not “captured” and so it is reflected back to our eyes. Therefore,  it is colour green for the phytoplankton.

Nobody wants their garden pond water to be green. The water should be clear instead. But green water is of phytoplankton which are food to zoo plankton and these zoo plankton are food to small organisms and further they are food to bigger organism like fish and fishes are our food!

One Thai friend of mine used to tell me that his pond water is ‘cleen’ . “Clean? good, enjoy your pond then”, I said. He responded by saying “I don’t like it because its cleen“. Green.

Ever wonder why the sky is blue?
