Once a Giant Fish.

Bangkok. Fish Vendor selling the giant goramy.

Osphronumus gouramy, the giant gouramy or kalui in Malay. This is a freshwater fish commonly found in paddy fields and canals along the fields. This is one fish that gulps for air at the water surface. They are air-breather. Therefore, if you keep this fish in your tank without an aerator or pumps, this gouramy will survive normally as long as it is able to access to water surface for air. Save energy, need not have to use electrical pump.

This ‘giant’ also a herbivorous. Vegetarian. Well, I need not have  to buy that fancy Japanese koi red, bright and expensive pellets for this fish. Also, I don’t need CP fish pellet. All I need are some leaves, just leaves from tapioca or banana plants. They eat leaves, left overs veggie and fruits from the kitchen. Oh yes, they eat algae too. Save money, need not have to buy expensive fish pellets to grow them.

Finally, the best of all, they are delicious. Oh ya, almost forget, they can be eaten. Giant goramy is common on dining table in Indonesia and Thailand. You should try Phla leuk namprik or perca ikan gorami.

Anyone? Perca ikan gorami, Bali
